Greetings ~
If your about to visit Akron, Ohio on your travels, there's one place you have to stop by. And if your a local and have lived in Akron for many years, and don't know of this place, you have a treat in store for you.
The NEW Akron History Center and Museum is a must for anyone interested in history. From the rubber shops that once graced the downtown area to the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous at the gate lodge of Stan Hywet Hall. From the soap Box Derby to the Goodyear Airdock. From furniture that once stood at the Firestone mansion to the canal system, the history of Akron, Ohio is covered on three floors of one of the Historic downtown buildings.
As museums go, this one is on a smaller size. You can tour it all in about an hour. Two hours if your going to read everything you find. But it's probably one of the best hours...or two, that you will spend anywhere.
Each of the three floors are connected by stairs. However, the staff is great and offer elevator service if you wish. So, if your old like me and find it hard to walk around, No problem! You can ride up and down. Also, the entire place is wheelchair friendly.
There are restrooms and they are all brand new, state of the art facilities. The staff here are wonderful. Friendly, courteous and very informative. You are left alone to enjoy your tour but, if you have questions, one is ready to answer them.
The building is nearly 100-years old but has been entirely re-done and is very clean and up to date. One of the most impressive features is, once you go out the back door on the ground floor, you have an up-close look at the old Ohio canal system. It runs right behind the building.
If you want to make a day of it, there are several restaurants and bars close by. There are seating outside as well. There's parking all over the place. We were lucky to get a street parking space right at the front door. And because we went on a Saturday, the parking was free. (Free parking on Saturday and Sunday). Plus, a great part is...the museum is free! That's right! There is still somewhere really cool you can go for free.
So, if your in the city for a wedding, family gathering, the holidays or, your just passing through, you really need to stop at the Akron History Center and Museum. It's right there at 172 South Main Street in downtown Akron. Very easy to find. Check the link at the end of this blog for their website. When you go, tell them Mr. Ed sent you. You won't get a prize for that or anything else. I just want them to know my name. And, while your there, have a great time and Enjoy yourself.
